50th Anniversary Climb

50th Anniversary Commemorative Climb

Climbers! This is your opportunity to participate in a sure to be historic climb. Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the climb that led to the formation of our humble climbing club. Plan now to spend Memorial Day weekend driving down to Mt Shasta in northern California!

Details:

  • Destination: Mt. Shasta
  • Date: May 25-27, 2013
  • Climbers: BCC or equivalent skills
  • Questions / Sign-up: Contact Membership

A lot has changed in 50 years. One of those changes is a 10 person party limit on Mt Shasta. Another is the price of gasoline and chartered buses. For these reasons, we will not be able to rent a bus and all climb as one big party. The initial plan is for Sunday May 26 to be summit day. This allows for making the long drive down on Friday night and/or Saturday and the drive back to Seattle on Monday. (The 1963 party did the climb as a one day push with 7000 feet of elevation gain.)

Tentative Itinerary:

  • Friday May 24: Arrive at Bunny Flat trailhead (6880’) stay here or hike in 1.7 miles to horse camp to acclimatize
  • Saturday May 25: Hike up to Helen Lake base camp (10,443’)
  • Sunday May 26: Summit and decend to cars
  • Monday May 27: Drive back to Seattle

You are more than welcome to use this climb plan or do something a little different with Sunday as you summit day. This is often done as a day climb and also a ski decent.

2013 BOEALPS Spring Campout

One of our best events of the year, the BOEALPS Spring Campout is upon us. It is April 19-21 which is about 3 weeks away. We have the Bridge Creek Campground group site reserved (same place as last year) and guests are welcome. The group site is about 100 yards past the big heavy gate which will hopefully be unlocked on time this time. I’ve got 70lbs of pork shoulder to smoke and will also have a few hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers.

Due to the fact that we always have a huge surplus of food this year I am only asking BCC students and instuctors to bring a side item or desert for the potluck. If you bring a dish please bring everything needed to get it onto peoples plates. This isn’t to pick on the BCC, you guys are the only single group thats large enough to feed everyone. Also do NOT bring chips, those that are supposed to bring chips will know about it. I’m trying to cut down on throwing away 15 half finished bags of chips in the morning.

What to Bring: The club will provide the main dish for the BBQ. BYOB and a side dish or dessert to share with others (NO CHIPS!).

Fred Beckey Presentation

Climbing legend Fred Beckey will be giving a presentation for BOEALPS on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 PM in the 2-22 building.

I’m not exactly sure what his presentation will be about but its sure to be entertaining. Guests are welcome and we hope to see you there.

Gear Seminar

BOEALPS is offering the first ever gear seminar in February! This seminar will go over all the hardware required for climbing in the BCC class and beyond. Yes, the BCC already has a gear lecture. But due to time constraints it can’t be very interactive and hands-on. In this class we’ll do things like look at carabiners up close and compare the gate actions without a store employee hovering. We’ll go over all the possible features (and pros/cons) of a harness, helmet, belay device, and more. We’ll also show different ways to mark your gear. You can even bring in your own equipment and we can discuss how it’ll work for the class.

Whether you’ve never worn a harness before or if you already climb in the gym, this class will have something for you. There will also be handouts that will help you along your gear journey —- so don’t worry about being overloaded.

The big change for this year is that BOEALPS is no longer able to offer the prerequisite CPR/AED class (trust me, it’s a long story…) so participants wanting to sign up for WRFA MUST CURRENTLY HOLD A VALID CPR/AED CERTIFICATE, OR GET THEIR CPR/AED TRAINING PRIOR TO WRFA CLASS.

Constitution & Bylaws Amendment

The BOEALPS Constitution & Bylaws (C&BL) have been amended to reflect recent modifications to the Boeing Recreation club administration document requirements. It has been divided into two (2) documents. The C&BL reflects required documentation between the Boeing Recreation administration and BOEALPS. The new required document being implemented is called the Operating Procedures (OP). This document entails all BOEALPS operational requirements set by the club and not required by the Boeing Recreation administration. The main reason for the new OP document is to allow Boeing clubs to operate freely without constant intervention with the Boeing Recreation administration on club related amendments. The OP is required to adhere to all Boeing Recreation administration policies and guidelines.

Amendments:

  • Honorary Guests are eligible for BOEALPS membership benefits
  • Executive Board members can hold office a maximum term length of two (2) years
  • BOEALPS will contribute $1 per member per year to the BOEALPS-Agris Moruss Trust for Public Land (TPL) annual donation
  • Officer elections can be made by paper or electronically
  • Activities chair is responsible for organizing the BOEALPS Banquet
  • Major Climbing Class equipment reallocation is explained
  • The Executive Board has sole responsibility of the Operating Procedures
  • A unanimous vote by the Executive Board is required to amend the OP
  • A notice shall be sent to each member and a copy published to the BOEALPS website

Ambrose and Bob climbed the Nose on El Capitan in May 2010 over the course of 11 days that involved waiting out storms before good weather allowed them to top out after spending 3 nights on a portaledge during their ascent.

Joyce Holloway – Denali
Joyce climbed Denali (third attempt) in May/June 2010 with BOEALPS members Micah Nolin and Tom & Haldis Glasenapp.

Robyn Garrison – Vinson Massif
Robyn has climbed five of the Seven Summits with one of the most memorable being Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica, in November 2008.

She is involved in avalanche education through her work as an AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) instructor and trainer. In 2006, Margaret became the second woman in the US to complete her full UIAGM guide certification.

Since BOEALPS will already be out in Leavenworth for the weekend for the fall campout, here is another opportunity in the area to work on your rock climbing skills.  The American Alpine Institute is looking for volunteers to be mock students for people taking their instructor exams.  They would like you to sing up ahead of time so all needed information can be communicated to you. Below is the message from Jason Martin with some details.

The American Alpine Institute is running an American Mountain Guides Association Single Pitch Instructor Exam on Sunday in Leavenworth. We are currently seeking individuals who would like to play the role of student for the exam candidates on:

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2011

Primarily we are interested in climbers who haven't spent a great deal of time outdoors. The exam candidates will provide a day's worth of climbing instruction to those who are interested under the supervision of an AMGA Certified Rock Guide for FREE. Mock students will work with the guides from approximately 9am to 4pm. If you need to leave early, that's certainly fine. The ideal "mock client" will have rock shoes, a helmet and a harness, though if you don't have one of these things, we may be able to provide it.

The American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Instructor Course and exam is the first in the AMGA sequence of climbing instructor and guide training programs.

The SPI course was designed to help capable recreational climbers transition into capable and effective climbing instructors. The course focuses on the technical skills required by an instructor as they are applied in all forms of single pitch climbing instruction. In addition to this, the course addresses the essential educational and environmental tenets required to teach climbing. Those seeking certification may go on to take a two-day field examination following the course. Certified Single Pitch Instructors are expected to demonstrate the technical and educational proficiencies necessary to instruct a variety of single pitch rock climbing skills in a safe and effective manner to both groups and individuals.

WHEN:  Friday September 31st Thru Sunday October 2nd
Who:  ALL BOEALPS Members AND Their Guests
Why:  Come Have Fun Camping AND Rock Climbing

Details:
BOEALPS has rented the GROUP campsite AT Bridge Creek Campground ON Icicle Creek Road IN Leavenworth Friday AND Saturday night.
This YEAR the fall campout corresponds TO the FIRST weekend OF Oktoberfest IN Leavenworth!

Free Food!
The club will be providing hamburgers AND hot dogs FOR roasting AND fixings FOR a campfire ON Saturday night.
Bring a side OR dessert TO SHARE FOR Saturday.  BYOB.

Climbing!
Want TO go BUT NOT sure WHERE TO go climbing during the DAY OR NOT have a partner?  Reply TO this email AND I’ll make sure you’re hooked INTO a GROUP ON Saturday.  There will be several ICC AND BRC instructors available TO SET up TOP ropes AND climb WITH.

BOEALPS will be providing the main dish (real hotdogs, burgers – veggie & beef). We ask that you please bring a potluck item to share. Last year picnic goers also brought climbing gear for use at the Mountaineer’s Building outside wall.
